Neev- an effort towards accessibility

Neev is an academic project done in collaboration with developmental specialists at Wellmom Antenatal, and MKW Hospital, Delhi. Dr. Rashmi Bawa is an occupational therapist and a neuro paedriatrics specialist with over 25 years of experience with children combatting Sensory processing disorders.
This project focuses on designing a range of adaptive accessories to help individuals with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) manage their symptoms effectively. Many people with SPD experience difficulties in processing sensory input, leading to overstimulation, under-responsiveness, or a constant craving for sensory feedback. By creating functional and thoughtfully designed accessories, this project aims to provide comfort, regulation, and improved daily functioning for individuals who struggle with sensory challenges.
The primary goal is to develop a collection of sensory-friendly products that cater to different needs, including tactile, auditory, vestibular, proprioceptive, and visual sensitivities. These accessories will serve as practical tools that aid in sensory regulation, helping individuals feel more comfortable and engaged in their environments. The products will be designed with usability, aesthetics, and versatility in mind to ensure they seamlessly integrate into everyday life while effectively addressing sensory needs.
These adaptive accessories were primarily designed for individuals with SPD, including
children and adults, as well as caregivers, therapists, and educators seeking effective tools for sensory regulation. The designs will consider the diverse ways SPD manifests, ensuring that each product can be tailored to suit specific sensory needs and preferences. These products will also benefit people with neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), who often experience similar sensory challenges.
A primary design consideration for this project was that each accessory must be functional, durable, and aesthetically appealing while addressing the unique sensory requirements of the user. Materials were be carefully chosen to ensure they provide the desired sensory feedback without causing discomfort. For individuals with tactile sensitivities, fabrics and textures must be soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic. Weighted elements may be incorporated to support proprioceptive needs, while discreet fidget mechanisms can be designed to help with focus and anxiety management. The accessories should be adaptable for use in multiple environments, including home, school, and work settings, offering solutions that are both practical and stylish.
The collection includes a range of adaptive accessories tailored to different sensory challenges. Wearable items such as compression vests, weighted wristbands, and textured gloves provide comfort and proprioceptive input, helping regulate sensory responses. Discreet fidget tools integrated into everyday accessories like bracelets, keychains, or clothing fasteners offer tactile engagement without drawing unnecessary attention. Auditory solutions such as noise-dampening ear covers or subtle sound-filtering earpieces support those with sound sensitivities. For individuals who seek oral stimulation, chewable accessories designed with safe and durable materials will be incorporated into the collection. Additionally, visual aids such as tinted lenses or patterned overlays can assist in reducing overstimulation from bright lights or chaotic visual environments.
The design process began with research and user testing to gain insights into the specific needs and preferences of individuals with SPD. Collaboration with occupational therapists, educators, and individuals with lived experience ensured the designs are both effective and user-friendly. Prototypes were developed and tested to refine materials, functionality, and usability. Sustainability and safety are also key considerations, ensuring that the materials used are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and long-lasting. The final products were be designed to be accessible, customizable, and available in various styles to suit different personal preferences.
By providing thoughtfully designed adaptive accessories, this project aims to enhance sensory regulation, promote comfort, and improve quality of life for individuals with SPD. These products empower users to navigate their daily environments with greater ease, confidence, and focus. The accessories not only serve a functional purpose but also help to reduce the stigma around sensory challenges by offering designs that blend seamlessly into
everyday life. By integrating style, usability, and innovation, this collection provide a meaningful solution to an often-overlooked need in the market.
A very special note of thanks goes to the children and their families who graciously agreed to be a part of this study. Their openness and willingness to share their experiences have been the foundation of this research. Observing and understanding the challenges they face daily has given me an invaluable perspective on the complexities of SPD. Their patience, trust and cooperation throughout this process have been deeply appreciated, and I sincerely hope that this research contributes in some way to improving their lives.
